A CO₂ calculator that makes you want to learn more

There are various providers for calculating your own carbon footprint, but they can only be accessed via a web browser and are very dull both visually and in terms of content. Apart from the calculated result, they also offer little added value.

So how could interaction with a CO₂ calculator be made more inviting and informative?

As part of my further training as a UX/UI designer, I spent four days working on this project in a team with three other participants to design an app for calculating your personal CO₂ footprint.

Environmental protection without critisizing

Umweltschutz
ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger

We wanted to introduce users of a broad age group to the topic of environmental protection and the calculation of the carbon footprint in a playful way, without criticizing their current lifestyle. The app had to be visually appealing, provide information on the topic and motivate users to rethink their own behavior.

Query behaviors and give impulses

The questions on the user's current behavior are divided into categories or topic blocks, so that the survey is designed to be entertaining. The user can pause in between and therefore does not have to adjust to a seemingly endless catalog of questions that he has to work through in one go. The questions are based on examples from existing online calculators and have been partially adopted.

In addition to the test result, a German and global average value is displayed for a better classification and the user is given the opportunity to receive some tips on how to reduce their own carbon footprint with small changes.

In order to offer further added value in addition to the calculation and to retain the user for longer, we have integrated a blog alongside the option to subscribe to a newsletter. This blog is intended to address relevant topics, allowing users to delve deeper into sustainability and environmental protection, further motivating them to reconsider and change their behaviors.
